Promoting Your Website

There are two basic methods of advertising on the internet.

The free method, known as Organic Marketing, involves a good deal of work over time.

The basic idea is to get as much traffic to your site as possible. Traffic comes from links. Many good quality links bring relevant, qualified traffic to your site. This is the type of traffic that Search Engines regard highly..

Submit your website to DMOZ, The Open Directory Project. It's the world's largest hand edited directory, with over 590,000 categories. It can take some time to get a listing, but it is free, and very high quality.

You should cultivate incoming links and develop great unique content, and include generous portions of link bait. Reciprocal link campaigns are also a great way to bring traffic to your website. Just ensure the links are high quality and relevant to your website's content.

Use Social Networking Websites like LinkedIn, Facebook or MySpace to link to your website.
You can join and post in some forums related to your web site, and drop your URL (web address) when it is relevant and appropriate to do so. It might take a year or two, but is it ever worth it. You can also add your URL on Wikipedia, on a relevant page. It however must be a very obviously useful link, as it can be deleted "at will" by their Editors.

The pay method, known as PPC or Pay-Per-Click Marketing. This is best used if time-to-rank well is important and you want to maximise your ROI, by having high "clickthrough" and "conversion" rates.

Google Adwords
Adwords has the biggest share of the Pay Per Click (PPC) market. It is easy to set up an account, and Google's interface is simple to use. You set up an account with your credit card, and then start by setting up a campaign based upon your keywords. Be forewarned, however, that Adwords can run up large credit card charges, especially if you use a set of generic keywords.

Yahoo Search Marketing
YSM has a much smaller portion of the PPC market. Their User interface is not as easy as Google's, and it can be confusing at first. On the positive side, though, it's much easier to understand the concept. The higher the bid, the higher your ranking on the page.
